Hoping someone can help me - I just bought my fourth vette about a monthe ago and trying to get everything working. It's an 84 coupe. When I purchased it - the dash lightts were non functional. Just thought it was problems typical to C4's until the past coupkle times I started it - everything lit up like a Christmas Tree - then goes off after about 30 seconds - Anyone got any comments or suggestions?

check the tiny light sensor in the dash itself that turns the light on in the daylight it may be bad. dash problems in the early c-4's are common

I have a similar problem with my 84 instrument cluster. I can see where the tiny light sensor is on the dash. When the dash lights are working properly, if you cover the light sensor with a finger, the instrument display will go dim. I presume that is the normal operation.

Having said that, is this light sensor a replacable item, or part of the insrument cluster module (which must be sent away to be serviced)?

I believe I have your answer! Behind the dash guage area is a small circuit board. It happens to set just above one of the bulbs that light the cluster.
After a while from the heat of the bulb, the solder begins to break down on the back, lower part of the circuit board. Simple fix for someone with solder capabilities, removing & resoldering should fix your problem.  (Not bad for a girl!)

They are crazy bright lights. They are so bright that they give off a 'light' effect. That is, the light makes the whites in your clothes glow, etc. I personally thought it was too intense of a bright. The problem you might have is that the LED bulbs, on the other hand, could not be bright enough to see.Light Bulb
