I have 1989 corvette. When it gets hot, above 220, like in traffic, when you turn it off and try restart it doesn't. All the electronics work dash, radio, lights, etc. but no ignition. When the engine cools down (about 1 hour) it starts right up. My mechanic says that he needs to duplicate the problem which means he needs to ride around with me and that ain't happening. Somebody, anybody please help me. scipio

What is the temprature out side when this happens? Does the motor turn over? I had a 4-runner that did the same this summer when the outside Temp got above 95 and i drove it around town It wouldn't start turned out to be a bad coil.

need more information, check battery voltage when cranking engine, voltage should be above 10 volts if not check battery charge to be sure the battery is full charged. if you have a battery charger charge battery over night then check battery voltage again while cranking, if not above 10 volts buy new battery.

I have the same problem with my 'Vette. I have an '89 as well, and the guy I bought it from said it is because the starter is right next to the exhaust and overheats. The problem can be alleviated by buying a performance starter or one with a heat shield. My starter completely blew, so I will be replacing it this weekend. Good luck!

you need to trouble shoot, does it crank ? yes, try fuel, do you have fuel prsr? yes try to start it with full open throtle if it does you may have a leaking injector if it does not try the ignition do you have spark while you crank it if not check ignition module. so on til you find the culprit, now you will need a few tools such as fuelprs gage, volt meter, test light and go at it, that is what your mechanic is going to do

My '89 did that same thing when I bought it. It is a common problem with these cars because the starter butts up against the exhaust pipes and over time wears out because of the heat. Your best bet is to just replace the starter, either with an OEM or a performance heat-resistant one. I replaced mine shortly after getting my C4, and the car hasn't had a problem starting, even when really hot, since. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my '76, and as has been mentioned by others, it was the starter getting too hot from the exhaust. It is a simple fix, by bolting on a starter shield to prevent the starter from getting too hot. If you want to spend bigger bucks and replace it with a performance starter, that will also work, but the shield is cheap and you can utilize your existing starter. They come in chrome or painted.
