I JUST PURCHASED A 1981 CORVETTE AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID HE BUILT THE 5.7 LITER L1 MOTOR HIMSELF. MY QUESTION IS THAT IT HAS A LOUD WHINING NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A STEERING PUMP LOW ON FLUID, BUT IT'S NOT. HE SAID THAT THE NOISE WAS NATURAL BECAUSE IT IS "GEAR DRIVEN". IS THIS A NATURAL NOISE THAT IS TO BE EXPECTED?

I have an 80. There should not be a "loud whinning" noise, unless something is amiss. Does this come from the engine, ps, fan blower ? That is really the first step. If it's from the engine, I would get it checked before something bad comes apart.

If gear drive was installed at rebuild The "whine"IS NORMAL. Gear drive is replacement of stock timing chain, that can stretch and get sloppy, with four gears. Cam gear, crank gear, and two small idler gears that install between them to eliminate chain. Though higher performance then chain they are noisy. Some guys love it as it gives them the sound of a big 6-71 blower under the hood.
