In my recently acquired '81 C3 I am replacing the very tired L81 with a GMPP 350/330HP vortec long block.  With a few modifications everything is working just fine -- with one exception.  The GM dual plane intake manifold I purchased to match the vortec heads is nearly one inch higher than the intake on the L81.  All indications are that the stock air cleaner atop the quadrajet will not clear the lowered hood.  Have any of you run into this problem?  If so, how did you remedy it?  For appearance purposes I would like to keep the stock air cleaner.  Thanks.

Sounds like you may have to swap intake manifolds if you're really into keeping the stock air cleaner assembly.  Either that or try to find a dropped base air cleaner and use the stock lid.

You wont be able to keep original air cleaner. Like the above post says, try a drop base (summit has em ,edelbrock has them, jegs), do your homework,,, some drop base wont clear the round choke thing (forgot its name).
Then go down a 1/2 in size in height of air filter, and make up for it by getting the lid that lets air flow thru (k&n).
Make sure you saw  the airfilter nut stud shorter  or it'll poke your hood

get a highrise hood will work too...

OR you can get lower motor mounts...  We used to make those custom all the time to drop the center of balance on cars down and 1 inch is NOTHING when it comes to lowering motor mounts in most cars...  BUT you must check under-engine clearances or you just trade on proble for another...  You chould have gone with the GMPP ZZ4 like my 1980 vette has :-)  fit right in... few small adjustments like water pump shaft lenght and stuff but that was not really a major issue...

Sounds like you'd need to look into a holly low profile air cleaner. Summit has the air cleaner in the " air intake dressup pages" I forgot the name of the air cleaner, But its from Holly and it has dual side air intakes and it is sharp and LOW. cost about 270.00. It'll be the next think I buy for my 79 check my ride on readers rides EDZOOOM
