81 speedometer making some noise

It seems that only in the morning my speedometer seems to be making a little noise and the needle jerks a little but then seems to quit. Does anyone know if this is a sign that maybe the cable is about to go or the speedometer itself? If it's just the cable is it a major job to change or is it something that can be done without removing the dash?

I don't know how difficult it would be to check the speedometer. I have an 82 Vette, no problem there but, I had the same problem in another classic car I have. 1974 GTO. It made the noise and the needle surged back and forth. I had it rebuilt and it works fine. Still using the same speedo cable. Not much help but the problem seemed the same.
