Gas gauge or sending unit?

I have an '89 that I use as a daily driver. Love the car except it has run out of gas twice recently.
Both times the gas gauge showed plenty of bars and the "range" showed plenty of miles left. I ran some "Techron" through the tank but no fix. Now the "range" shows a constant 20 miles.
Is it the gauges or could it be the sending unit?
Thanks for any help.

could be either... but more than likely... the sending unit... it only takes half an hour to pull the sending unit and pump...... you might want to get a new flange gasket from GM first..
with it out... you can plug it back in... ground the unit with a jumper lead if it is nor grounded... move it to the bottom of its range.. see what the dash does...
move it to the top... see what the dash does...
make sure the strainer on the end of the fuel pump does not interfere with the float arm or float... it is possible that somebody wedged it in and bent it;...
it is also possible that the pump or the strainer has turned... and is blocking full downward travel of the lever arm...
the best thing is NOT to drive it below a quarter tank... the pumps tend to have much shorter lifes when driven dry.. the bearings in the high speed pump are lubed by gasoline.. when air goes through the pump.. the bearings go dry for that instant.. the pump motor also overspeeds for that instant.. shortening pump life...

Thanks for suggestion.
I've run 3 jugs of Techron Plus through this last tank w/o any results. My plan was to attack the unit this weekend, so your reply is a GREAT help.
Much appreciation.

be sure to pick up a new tank sending unit gasket from GM....
flat rectangular gasket with a bunch of holes for the sending unit mount bolts to pass through...
this way you can put it back together when you find the gasket damaged...

One thing we are starting to see on the C4's is the plastic liner in the tank seems to grow and starts pushing in word to the point that the fuel gauge float gets stuck on it and stops working then when the tank is refilled the float works normal intel it hangs up again. Some thing you mite check. David Steele
