Wheel locks

I purchased a used 2001 Corvette and it is missing the wheel lock key. The card is still in the glove box with wheel lock key I.D.#, however the company -- Amcor/Mascotech in Livonia, Michigan is no longer in buisness. Anyone have a suggestion on how to get this key?

most better tire shops have a box of specialized sockets.. that can remove most wheel lock nuts...

google this term...

wheel lock removal kit        then click on google shopping..  you can see the variations in tools available..

most of the time... the locking nuts can be removed without any damage..

do check on the tire iron...  lug wrench..   some of the lock nut sockets have steel cables attached and a clip that attaches them to the tire iron..  so they are where you expect to find them...

warning... some shops and techs have not invested in a wheel lock removal kit... they resort to the air hammer... and can do major damage.. so are true experts and can get it off without any damage to the wheel...  it all depends on how tight they are installed...

one last thing...   some shops have a small box of left over lock nut sockets.. from change over to new versions.. they keep the sockets to remove tires when customers have lost theirs.. or have put them somewhere they cannot be found..

there is one trick i should share...

once in a great while... a mag wheel lug nut will strip on... and when trying to install it or remove it... the stud turns ...     take a dremel tool.. or a quarter inch die grinder with a carbide tool... and slice the sides of the hex .. if you do both sides of the hex... you can use a hammer and chisel to split the hex off.. the rim will then slide over the rest... and you can get at it...

and one last thing..  be sure to show the lug nut socket to your wife...   mine was out cleaning out the car after a trip...  found this weird thing in the glove box.. and tossed it with the rest of the trash..
